COMMENTAIRES DU COURTIER

POLLY AGATHA might well define the term "Modern Classic". With her long keel, bronze fastened carvel construction and well proportioned gaff rig, she has the charm and presence of a fast Edwardian cutter. When first commissioning this boat her first owner was adamant he wanted not only a thing of beauty but also a yacht capable of sailing anywhere - all the time keeping his family safe and comfortable.

Her contemporary classic interior is cleverly designed with detail and finish befitting that of a vintage yacht - she has an owner's cabin with a large double berth and en suite; a forward cabin also en suite and unheard of on a classic yacht of this size!

POLLY AGATHA has totally succeeded in her original design brief - looking and feeling like a yacht from the turn of the last century she has looked after her owners impeccably cruising UK and Scottish Waters in all conditions.

She has also operated as a successful charter vessel, taking guests cruising along the south coast of England, the Western Isles of Scotland, as well as the Channel Islands and Brittany.

The build and historical notes

Cockwells the builders of POLLY AGATHA are very much traditional shipwrights with the skills, alongside advanced engineering and boat building techniques, were ideally qualified to be the creators of this bespoke Edwardian cutter. Thus use of modern as well as traditional materials has been optimised for the benefit of durability and to reduce the need for ongoing maintenance; thereby also achieving a classical look and feel with the benefits of modern advances in technology.

POLLY AGATHA was conceived as a replica of the pilot cutter PEGGY, built in 1904 by Rowles of Pill – and these Bristol Channel pilot cutters were developed to sail efficiently in one of the most difficult seaways in the world with its strong tides, narrow channels and short steep waves - as well as the blue waters of the Western Approaches. They would spend weeks at sea in all conditions waiting for work so they not only had to be faster than their competitors but also capable of withstanding all the storms the Atlantic Ocean could throw at them. Thus they were demonstrably very seaworthy – yet imbued with beautiful lines nonetheless. These cutters evolved with the fastest and strongest being replicated and improved upon - until by the early 1900s steam took over……………

“Yachting World” in August 2008 commented that “This new pilot cutter is a sheer delight to sail and deceptively fast to boot”. POLLY AGATHA is of such note that she has been accepted onto the National Register of Historic Ships.

Construction

For the most part, the structural integrity of hull and deck is replicated from the original boat PEGGY with the same construction techniques used. The exceptions are the use of bronze fastenings instead of iron, and in the construction of the deck. This improved even on the strength, stiffness and durability of the original by having two layers of marine ply sheathed in epoxy and glass, overlaid with ½ inch by 3 inch teak planking. The keel is opepe and frames are oak with larch planking, all fastened with bronze screws.
